History of the 1911 Society and the Single Stack Classic

In 1994, Pistolsmith, Richard Heinie, and then USPSA Illinois Section Coordinator, Russell Cluver, were discussing the amount of grumbling on about guns and equipment in general. After quite a lot of discussion, they came up with the idea of a match that would use only 1911 Single Stack Pistols.

Why? Because the 1911 Single Stack Government Model Pistol dominated I.P.S.C. And many other disciplines of shooting sports for years. They decided this match should be a shooting contest and not an equipment event.

Therefore, they came up with the idea that all holsters and mag pouches should be of the same type, namely concealed carry type of something intended for all day carry. Therefore, the holster rules were born. They decided the course of fire for such an event should have courses that could be completed with no more than three magazines of ammunition. Except for the equipment rules the 1911 Single Stack Classic uses IPSC rules as a guide.

Milan Rifle Club, in Milan, Illinois, was at the time looking to run a major shooting tournament. Milan Rifle Club has an excellent shooting facility and was the site of the I.P.S.C. Nationals in 1982 and 1983. Milan Rifle Club was asked if they were interested and they were. Three excellent matches were held at Milan Rifle Club.

The fourth annual event was held at Pike-Adams Sportsman's Alliance Range, located near Barry, Illinois. PASA continues to be the home of the 1911 Single Stack Classic to this day. After it's tenth year it continues to be a grand success.

This match has turned into a match that some shooters absolutely wouldn't miss. The SSC has drawn competitors from both I.P.S.C. And I.D.P.A. disciplines. As ten-time SSC winner Rob Leatham has said: This match is all about shooting skills, everybody is playing on a level field.

In 1996 a meeting was held at the USPSA Limited Nationals and it was decided to form the 1911 Society, so that the 1911 Pistol could be promoted and to also insure that the Single Stack Classic would continue.

The 1911 Society has also sponsored major IPSC/USPSA and IDPA matches in the promotion of the 1911 pistol.

In 2004 Springfield Armory stepped up and became the match sponsor. The 1911 Single Stack Classic is now known as The Springfield 1911 Single Stack Classic. Along with supporting the SSC as they have done from the beginning, Springfield is also running an XD Challenge match to support local youth shooters. Plus they give away a ton of guns to the winners!

The 2006 match was the start of a special relationship with USPSA. Late in 2005, the 1911 Society was approached by USPSA to help launch their Single Stack Division. The 1911 Springfield Single Stack Classic also became the first USPSA Single Stack Nationals. This match was a huge success for both USPSA and the 1911 Society. It brought in at least 40 new members to USPSA and there were several old members who came out of retirement just to shoot this match. Plus there was a larger contingency of Grandmaster and Master USPSA shooters who showed up to give Robby a run for his money. The 2007 match will also have the partnership with USPSA and we are planning on a slightly larger match for 2007 with added stages and more competitors. You will still shoot it all in one day. Sign up early...the slots are going fast!!

Where are we going from here? Well, only time will tell. But one thing is for sure - The 1911 Single Stack Classic will continue to be one of the best matches of the year. One you shouldn't miss!
