In 1994, Pistolsmith, Richard Heinie, and USPSA Illinois Section Coordinator, Russell Cluver, were discussing the amount of grumbling going on about guns and equipment in general. After quite a lot of discussion, they came up with the idea of a match that would use only 1911 Single Stack Pistols.

Why? Because the 1911 Single Stack Government Model Pistol dominated I.P.S.C. and many other disciplines of shooting sports for years. They decided this match should be a shooting contest and not an equipment event.

Therefore, they came up with the idea that all holsters and mag pouches should be of the same type, namely concealed carry type or something intended for all day carry. Therefore, the holster rules were born. They decided the course of fire for such an event should have courses that could be completed with no more than three magazines of ammunition.

Milan Rifle Club, in Milan, Illinois, was at the time looking to run a major shooting tournament. Milan Rifle Club has an excellent shooting facility and was the sight of the I.P.S.C. Nationals in 1982 and 1983. Milan Rifle club was asked if they were interested and they were. Three excellent matches were held at Milan Rifle Club.

The fourth annual event will be held at Pike-Adams sportsman's Alliance Range, located near Barry, Illinois. The current site of the USPSA/IPSC Nationals.

This match has turned into a match that some shooters absolutely wouldn't miss. As three time winner Rob Leathan has said: This match is all about shooting skills, everybody is playing on a level playing field.

In 1996 a meeting was held at the USPSA Limited Nationals and it was decided to form the 1911 Society, so that the 1911 Pistol could be promoted and to also insure that the Single Stack Classic would continue.
